    The Council on Addictions of New York State (CANYS) is an organization of prevention, education, intervention and treatment agencies throughout New York State that meets to address concerns and issues that both affect the practice of prevention, intervention and treatment of alcoholism, drug abuse, and problem gambling as well as of organizational efficiency including administrative, managerial programmatic, fiscal and staff and Board concerns.

    Our mission is to effectively address problems related to alcohol, tobacco, drug use and gambling problems in our local communities as well as regionally and statewide.

    CANYS is also committed to advocating for education about problems related to alcohol, tobacco, other drugs and gambling and their associated problems.

     Our approach is community-based, and our commitment often translates into a call to action for effective social and health care policies and laws, and to change cultural norms throughout our society.

  Alcoholism and drug abuse remain the NUMBER  ONE Public Health Problem in America.  Each day, over 1,500 Americans DIE because of alcohol, tobacco or other drugs, and many thousands more find themselves in hospitals, in mental institutions, jails and prisons,  or in family or divorce court because of the far reaching and devastating effects.

Alcoholism, Chemical Dependency and Compulsive Gambling continues to affect
1-in-every 4 New York State Families!!!

On Thursday, September 25, 2008 we will be hosting the Fifth Annual “ America Honors Recovery” Luncheon at the National Press Club in Washington , DC where you will receive your award.  We will pay for all your travel and lodging expenses to Washington .  Christopher Kennedy Lawford is serving as chair of this year’s luncheon.

CANYS
COUNCIL ON ADDICTIONS
OF NEW YORK STATE
c/o 58 Brunlar Court , M52,
Cooperstown
, NY 13326

Please take time to renew your membership.  If you aren’t currently a member, please consider joining CANYS in 2010!

The Council on Addictions of New York State, Inc. ( CANYS ) is an organization of community-based prevention, education, intervention and treatment agencies throughout New York State . Our meetings address concerns and issues that affect prevention, treatment and recovery of diseases of addiction. We also support each other on issues related to organizational efficiency.

CANYS continues to grow! As an incorporated statewide organization, we are undertaking projects that support the mission of Council: advocating on local, regional, state and national levels; sharing resources to promote public awareness. Currently, over 85% of Councils in NYS became 2009 paid members, reflecting our growth of 15% over the last several years!  Please take time to renew your membership.  If you aren’t currently a member, please consider joining CANYS in 2010!

A typical CANYS Meeting format…

A CANYS meeting is a wonderful opportunity to network, share with colleagues both the excitement of new program development as well as the challenges we face. Often we will schedule a workshop or information meeting on Thursday afternoon, followed by, a break from our hectic work schedules, with Thursday evening dinner.  The Friday business meeting provides us all with the opportunity to share both successes and challenges, most often finding out that we are not in this alone. Most importantly the strength of the CANYS meeting gives us the opportunity to work together to assure the strength and effectiveness of all community-based prevention, education, intervention and treatment agencies in New York State .

We frequently invite key leadership to our Friday morning meetings.  Guests/Invitees for 2009 included:   Associate Commissioner Mary Ann Christopher (OASAS), Roberta Leis (Join Together), Robert Pezzolesi (Founder/Coordinator of the Alcohol Advertising Reform Initiative), John Debes (OASAS Bureau of Prevention), Greg Baydus (NY SED), and Steve Kipnis, MD; OASAS Medical Director.

Additionally in 2009 CANYS revisited and updated our 2007 Strategic Planning in preparation for our new Executive Committee which will start in January of 2010. CANYS’s Support and Development Committee produced our “Guide to Member Services” also in 2009. With the development of strategic public policy priorities this year, CANYS commissioned (4) Issue Briefing papers to be used by CANYS members on the following priorties:

·        Issue Briefing #1: Alcohol Consumption & Alcohol Related Problems

·        Issue Briefing #2: The 21 Minimum Legal Drinking Age

·        Issue Briefing #3: Wine Expansion in New York State

·        Issue Briefing #4: Medical Marijuana

Each of these issue briefing papers were distributed both through the CANYS egroup and posted on the CANYS website at www.canys.net.

What a statement it would be if EVERY Council in New York State became a member in 2010 and we are so close to reaching that goal!  The annual dues of $225 for 2010 remain the same as the annual membership dues for the last several years. But, if this presents a hardship for your budget, you may submit a request for reduced hardship dues which will be reviewed by the CANYS Board.

As 2009 comes to a close, I want to take this opportunity to thank each of you for your ongoing support and commitment to CANYS. It has been my absolute pleasure and honor to serve CANYS as President for the last three years. Please join me now in both welcoming and extending your ongoing support and commitment to CANYS and our new CANYS officers for 2010:

Larry Calkins, President
Julie Dostal, Vice President
Dan Shubsda, Secretary/Treasurer

Please send your 2010 membership to:

Dan Shubsda, Treasurer
Northpointe Council, Inc.
800 Main St., Suite 2A
Niagara Falls , NY 14301

Please write “2010 Membership” on the memo line and  note the new address.

We thank you for your support!

PERSONAL FINDINGS

earthrotate61x1.gif (18661 bytes)

     "CANYS is especially helpful to me. I find mutual support from colleagues who do what I do, it helps me keep current with statewide initiatives, we share ideas and experiences with new prevention curriculums, strategies, etc., find assistance with personal issues, share Fundraising ideas, use the Thursday sessions to solve/address the concerns that we have, and it provides a forum to speak regularly with Jean Miller and Fran Harding."               -- Jim Conklin

      "I am most appreciative of our advocacy and success with "repealing" the 10% holdback of state aid. All in all from the NYSCADA days until now, the group has really functioned as a (mini) support group for executive issues. We have sponsored some trainings and rallied people to the Legislative Day, but mostly it has been support."                               -- Susan Jenkins

      "I relish the knowledge and support of existing Directors, and I sit there like a sponge absorbing the information. CANYS keeps me informed about events, assists with things like Council posters, gives us a heads-up on funding and program issues, there is development of friendships, and a sharing of information and support networks. I especially appreciate the influence of the Councils regarding OASAS and other entities (NCADD, Channing Bete)."
  - - Brad Finn

       "We interface with agency Execs highly skilled in community based prevention work and surf the "public funding" streams. I have been an admirer at how much many of my colleagues have been able to accomplish in their communities. I have received inspiration and guidance from many at CANYS and I am grateful for all of your willingness to share things with me such as policies, procedures, employee manuals, & staffing & salary information. My membership in CANYS has made my work at LICADD much easier. Thank you."               -- Jim Devine

QUOTE OF THE MONTH
:

"Throughout history,
it has been the inaction of those who could have acted;
the indifference of those who should have known better;
the silence of the voice of justice when it mattered most;
that has made it possible for evil to triumph."

-Haile Selassie -
