The Council on Addictions of New York State, Inc. ( CANYS ) is an organization of community-based prevention, education, intervention and treatment agencies throughout New York State . Our meetings address concerns and issues that affect prevention, treatment and recovery of diseases of addiction. We also support each other on issues related to organizational efficiency.

CANYS continues to grow! As an incorporated statewide organization, we are undertaking projects that support the mission of Council: advocating on local, regional, state and national levels; sharing resources to promote public awareness. Currently, over 85% of Councils in NYS became 2009 paid members, reflecting our growth of 15% over the last several years!  Please take time to renew your membership.  If you aren’t currently a member, please consider joining CANYS in 2010!

A typical CANYS Meeting format…

A CANYS meeting is a wonderful opportunity to network, share with colleagues both the excitement of new program development as well as the challenges we face. Often we will schedule a workshop or information meeting on Thursday afternoon, followed by, a break from our hectic work schedules, with Thursday evening dinner.  The Friday business meeting provides us all with the opportunity to share both successes and challenges, most often finding out that we are not in this alone. Most importantly the strength of the CANYS meeting gives us the opportunity to work together to assure the strength and effectiveness of all community-based prevention, education, intervention and treatment agencies in New York State .

We frequently invite key leadership to our Friday morning meetings.  Guests/Invitees for 2009 included:   Associate Commissioner Mary Ann Christopher (OASAS), Roberta Leis (Join Together), Robert Pezzolesi (Founder/Coordinator of the Alcohol Advertising Reform Initiative), John Debes (OASAS Bureau of Prevention), Greg Baydus (NY SED), and Steve Kipnis, MD; OASAS Medical Director.

Additionally in 2009 CANYS revisited and updated our 2007 Strategic Planning in preparation for our new Executive Committee which will start in January of 2010. CANYS’s Support and Development Committee produced our “Guide to Member Services” also in 2009. With the development of strategic public policy priorities this year, CANYS commissioned (4) Issue Briefing papers to be used by CANYS members on the following priorties:

·        Issue Briefing #1: Alcohol Consumption & Alcohol Related Problems

·        Issue Briefing #2: The 21 Minimum Legal Drinking Age

·        Issue Briefing #3: Wine Expansion in New York State

·        Issue Briefing #4: Medical Marijuana

Each of these issue briefing papers were distributed both through the CANYS egroup and posted on the CANYS website at www.canys.net.

What a statement it would be if EVERY Council in New York State became a member in 2010 and we are so close to reaching that goal!  The annual dues of $225 for 2010 remain the same as the annual membership dues for the last several years. But, if this presents a hardship for your budget, you may submit a request for reduced hardship dues which will be reviewed by the CANYS Board.

As 2009 comes to a close, I want to take this opportunity to thank each of you for your ongoing support and commitment to CANYS. It has been my absolute pleasure and honor to serve CANYS as President for the last three years. Please join me now in both welcoming and extending your ongoing support and commitment to CANYS and our new CANYS officers for 2010:
